McLaughlin meeting with Farry and Barnett on Magee student numbers

20 November, 2012 - by Maeve McLaughlin

Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin has secured meetings with both Education and Learning Minister (DEL), Stephen Farry and University of Ulster (UU) vice-Chancellor, Richard Barnett to press for all 500 student places announced in the recent Executive initiative to be allocated to the Magee Campus.

Maeve McLaughlin MLA (Foyle) said that she intends to impress on both the Minister and the vice-Chancellor the opportunity this presents them to begin to deliver on the long promised expansion of the Campus which is essential to the of the North West Regional regeneration plan.

 Maeve McLaughlin said:

“I have secured meetings with both the DEL Minister and UU vice-Chancellor to discuss the recent Executive announcement of 500 additional university places. I will meet the Minister today at 1 pm and the vice-Chancellor tomorrow afternoon. The Minister's announcement is welcome news and I will reiterate the Sinn Féin call and impress on them that it is our considered opinion that all of the 500 places should be allocated to Magee.

“This would provide for a more qualitative outcome generally than spreading them out across all of the university campuses. If the Minister would allocate these places to Derry, the benefits to the local economy and growth of the university would be invaluable.

“I urge the Minister, in line with his party’s manifesto commitments regarding the expansion of Magee to reflect on the limited impact that spreading these places across UU campuses and FE colleges would have as opposed to the positive and widespread impact it would have if all are allocated to Magee.

“I appreciate that the Minister has previously expressed his understanding of the importance of Magee expansion. He now has the opportunity to act on that understanding and deliver these additional places. I intend to deliver the same message to vice-Chancellor Barnett tomorrow.

“If Magee is to take a significant step towards the kind of university presence envisaged in Derry City’s ONE Plan, it needs DEL to allocate in the first instance the total additional student places to the Magee campus” CRÍOCH
