Huge number of children affected by domestic violence
Sinn Féin Junior Minister and West Belfast MLA Jennifer McCann has expressed concern at the level of children who are living in homes here that are effected by Domestic Violence.
Commenting on the latest statistics announced by UNICEF Ms McCann said,
"UNICEF believes that up to 30,000 children here are living in homes that are effected by domestic violence. That is a staggering figure.
“We all know the damage domestic violence causes to its victims and children who experience it in the home. The destructive impacts of that violence can be carried right through into their adult lives.
“All of us have a responsibility to ensure that children are protected and safe guarded against this and other types of violent crime. Next week begins the annual International 16 days of action to challenge domestic violence and there will be a number of events held right across the Island.
“I would urge people to attend events in your local area to highlight the issue of domestic violence and support those organisations like Women's Aid who work tirelessly on a daily basis to support individuals and children who are victims and survivors.
“We need to constantly raise awareness of this crime and it's effects so that it is no longer hidden. We also need to continue to provide the services needed by the people who are directly effected and ensure the perpetrator’s are brought before the courts."
