Sinn Féin welcome UN vote on Palestine

30 November, 2012 - by Pat Sheehan

Sinn Féin MLA and spokesperson on the Middle East Pat Sheehan has welcomed the historic decision by the United Nations General Assembly to grant non-member status to Palestine.

Speaking today Mr Sheehan said:

“This vote demonstrates the International Community’s determination to see a peaceful and just resolution of the  conflict in the region based on an inclusive dialogue involving  all the participants.

“A just and lasting peace can only be achieved if it is based on international law and respect for human rights.

“The recognition of Palestinian statehood is no threat to any people but rather can provide the framework for a meaningful process involving current protagonists.

“This step brings the Palestinian people closer to that statehood.

“The recent escalation of conflict in the region underlines the importance of the International Community’s role in encouraging inclusive negotiations involving all of the participants.

“Sinn Féin endorses the decision by the UN General Assembly and appeals to all governments and agencies to embrace this opportunity to build an effective and durable peace process.”
