Emigration and unemployment the harvest of failed economic policy – Tóibín
Speaking on the release of the latest live register figures, Peadar Tóibín, Sinn Féin spokesperson for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, said;
“Last year the Minister for Finance claimed the budget was all about jobs, this rhetoric has proven hollow with a net loss of 20,000 jobs since the government took power. Shockingly over 60% of those unemployed have been without work for at least a year.
“The government’s safety valve of emigration has seen over 87,000 people leave the state while it cynically claims the resulting fall of 0.2% in unemployment as a win.
“If this level of unemployment and emigration was being experienced by any other normal western society it would be seen for what it is, the harvest of failed economic policy. Despite this, the government like lemmings is heading straight to the economic cliff with its policy of austerity and bank bailouts.”
