No guarantee in “Youth Guarantee”: Reilly

5 December, 2012 - by Kathryn Reilly

Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Youth Affairs Kathryn Reilly has welcomed the “Youth Guarantee” initiative taken by the European Commission today.

Senator Reilly said;

“With Youth Unemployment running at thirty per cent in Ireland and at as high as fifty per cent in Greece and Spain action at an EU level is clearly to be welcomed.

“Sinn Féin will examine these proposals in the hope that they can play a role in helping in the fight against youth unemployment. We should be clear however that EU action is no excuse for domestic inaction. This government has a terrible record in tackling unemployment and youth unemployment in particular.

“An announcement of future policies in the EU does not change and will not change anything in the near future for the thousands of young Irish people unemployed. It is hard to see how any EU support for a guarantee can be sourced before 2014 at the earliest and even then it is not clear where it will be sourced from.

“Much remains unclear about the nature and enforceability of any guarantee too. In short, there is no ‘guarantee’ and action at home must be stepped up. Added support from the EU is always welcome but we need to ground this in the very real context of mass youth emigration and what is actually being proposed.”
