Erection of flags act of blatant intimidation – Sinn Féin councillor

6 December, 2012

Laganbank Sinn Féin councillor Deirdre Hargey has slammed those responsible for erecting flags on lamp posts on the Ormeau Road.

“Earlier today, my constituency office was informed by local residents that a group of 10 to 12 young males had begun erecting Union Jack flags on almost every lamp post from the Ormeau Bridge to Rosetta roundabout.

“This can only be seen as an act of blatant intimidation within a mixed religion community, which is lauded as an example of a shared area.

“The demographics of Ballynafeigh and Rosetta have changed considerably in recent years and this acts only to cause tension in the area.

“At this time of year when many of the shops on the road depend on the Christmas trade for survival, a usually busy festive atmosphere has been transformed into one of fear and apprehension.

“Unionists have a very low opinion of their flag if they believe it should be used in this way. Perhaps someone within political unionism will step forward and show some leadership around this issue.”
