Martina Anderson MEP supports Palestine in EU debate

13 December, 2012 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said that Israel must reverse its decision to expand illegal settlements on the West Bank.

Speaking in the European Parliament Ms. Anderson stated,

“The Israeli governments' decision to expand the illegal settlements in the West Bank is a blatant retaliation against the Palestinian people after their recent victory in the UN.

“This act of aggression, which continues the Israeli government's disregard for international law, must be condemned by all those who claim to uphold human rights and at the highest level in governments.

“In addition to this, the decision by the Israel government to withhold Palestinian Tax Revenues, to the sum of $100 million US, only serves to disrupt the peace negotiations and endanger the fragile stability in the region.

“Any genuine solution to the crisis will only be borne out of mutual respect and the upholding of all previous peace accords.

“The EU's relations with Israel must be conditional on its respect for international humanitarian law and I would urge the EU Council and Commission to freeze any upgrading in relations until the situation shows tangible signs of improvement.”
