Plan to cut medical card entitlement makes mockery of Reilly's health 'reform' - Ó Caoláin

1 January, 2013 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Commenting on reports that Health Minister James Reilly is to restrict entitlement further to the medical card, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin said:

"The massive cut of €781 million to the health budget in the Coalition's budget 2013 signalled that entitlement to the medical card would be targeted for further restriction. Health Minister James Reilly is preparing to take the medical card from thousands of families, inflicting financial hardship and poorer health prospects on already struggling people. It is especially bad news for the health of children and comes on top of the outrageous cuts to Child Benefit which hit low to middle income families worst.

"These cuts make a complete mockery of the claims of Minister Reilly and his Fine Gael and Labour colleagues that they are reforming the health services and moving towards free primary care for all. By further restricting medical card entitlement they are moving in the opposite direction." ENDS
