Ferris calls for full investigation of Atlantic Dawn

2 July, 2004

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries and Agriculture, Martin Ferris TD, has called on the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources to carry out a full investigation of all of the circumstances surrounding the licensing and allocation of tonnage to the Atlantic Dawn. Deputy Ferris was speaking following the resignation of the company's auditors Price Waterhouse Cooper who discovered major accounting errors.

Deputy Ferris said: "The resignation of the Atlantic Dawn auditors is only the latest in a serious of controversies surrounding the commissioning of this vessel. I am aware that the Comptroller and Auditor General is examining some of these but I also feel that it is something that ought to be thoroughly examined by the Department here, perhaps through the Oireachtas Select Committee. It is unacceptable that a time when many Irish fishermen are finding it difficult to survive due to restrictions on licensing and quota that this company, with the support of the Taoiseach and the former Minister, ought to be able to flout the regulations with impunity".
