Consultation on organ donation welcomed

5 February, 2013 - by Sue Ramsey

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Sue Ramsey has welcomed the announcement today by the First and Deputy First Ministers that the Health Department will now begin a consultation on how to increase the number of organ donations.

 Ms. Ramsey said,

“It is important that we maximise the number of organs that are available for transplant as for every one person who receives a transplant three other die due to a lack of organs available.

“Under the present system only 25% of the population carry a donor card yet in every survey carried out around 85% of those asked support organ donation.

“I welcome the fact that Health Minister Edwin Poots will now launch a consultation on how we increase the number of people on the donor list without impeding on peoples right to opt out.

“I would encourage people to get on the donor list and let their families know their feelings in terms of donation so that many more lives can be saved.  I would also ask people to engage with the consultation so we can formulate a system that maximises the number of organs available for transplantation”
