Minister of Health needs to step into horsemeat health scare

14 February, 2013 - by Sue Ramsey

Sinn Féin MLA and Chair of the Assembly’s Health Committee Sue Ramsey said that the horsemeat scare is a major health issue and the Minister of Health needs to come out with some clear guidelines and answers.

The West Belfast MLA said:

“This is a major health issue and the Minister for Health Edwin Poots, along with the Foods Standards Agency (FSA), needs to come out with clarity for the public.

“The Foods Standards Agency (FSA) gave a briefing to the Health and DARD Committees on Tuesday but this situation is changing hour by hour and the public need straight answers on what products are safe to eat.

“That is the responsibility of the FSA and if they can not bring some clarity to the situation then Edwin Poots needs to step in and make sure the public have the answers they need.

“With schools having been brought into the situation the Health Minister and the FSA need to come out with clear advice on and how the situation is going to be rectified.

“The public concerns around this food scare need to be dealt with and silence from both the FSA and the Health Minister is not acceptable.”
