Hospital infection figures show need for adequate staffing - Ó Caoláin

16 February, 2013 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Commenting on figures revealed today showing the high level of hospital-based infections, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said: "These figures show that while there has been some improvement in recent years, there is still a high level of hospital-based infections in this State. The drive to reduce these infections further is being jeopardised by the staffing shortage in our public hospitals, as a direct result of Government cutbacks and the recruitment embargo. Overcrowding, the lack of isolation units and personnel to staff them are important factors as is the move from in-house cleaning staff to contract cleaners. Health Minister James Reilly and the HSE need to take these figures seriously and act accordingly." ENDS
