Sport the big loser as flag protest cancels soccer game - Sinn Féin

16 February, 2013

Sinn Féin councillor Mary Ellen Campbell said sport, fans and the clubs concerned were the losers today after the Crusaders v Cliftonville game was called off due to a flag protest outside Seaview.

The North Belfast Councillor said:

"Today sport, the fans and both Crusaders and Cliftonville were the losers when this game was called off because of a flag protest outside Seaview.

"Both clubs put a lot of work into trying to ensure that this match went ahead and they are to be praised for their efforts.

" The wider community in North Belfast and residents around Seaview wanted this game to go ahead but a tiny minority, unrepresentative of the area, brought the flag protest into sport.

"This had nothing to do with football and the protestors need to explain why they targeted this eagerly awaited soccer derby and what they gained by doing so.

"Both clubs and their fans have a great relationship and I am sure that will continue despite today's unnecessary disappointment."
