O’Rourke looking forward to by-election challenge
The Sinn Féin candidate in the Meath East by-election Darren O’Rourke has welcomed the moving of the writ in the Dáil today and said he is looking forward to the challenge.
O’Rourke said the by-election gives the people of Meath East an opportunity to pass judgement on the government’s progress two years after it came to power and called on voters to reject the austerity policies of Fine Gael, Labour and Fianna Fáil.
“At the outset of the by-election campaign I want to pay tribute to the work of the late Shane McEntee and to his family who are still in mourning at his loss.
“I welcome the moving of the writ in the Dáil today and I am looking forward to the challenge of this campaign.
“The people of Meath East are suffering from the policies of this government. Unemployment, emigration, mortgage distress are all major problems across the constituency and have been made worse by the austerity policies of this government.
“In 2011 the people of Meath East voted for change. They roundly rejected the policies of Fianna Fáil. But unfortunately this Fine Gael and Labour government has simply carried on implementing the policies of Fianna Fáil.
“This time out I am calling on the people of Meath East to reject the austerity policies of Fine Gael, Labour and Fianna Fáil and to vote for the progressive policies of Sinn Féin.”
