*MEP Anderson endorses O’Neill ‘use local’ initiative*

6 March, 2013 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has endorsed Assembly Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill’s initiative in calling for a review of procurement contracts with a view to increase the use of local ingredients in government food contracts.

Martina Anderson said:

“In light of the ongoing revelations concerning the discovery of equine DNA
in various food products I endorse, Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill’s
initiative to ask Finance Minister Sammy Wilson to review the procurement
guidelines in an attempt to encourage the use of local ingredients in
government food contracts.

“Consumer confidence is paramount if we are to protect the hard earned
reputation of our farmers for their high quality beef produce. One way of
ensuring that reputation does not suffer long-term damage is by certifying
the contents are locally sourced and produced.

“The Central Procurement Directorate could lead by example by stipulating
in initial terms of contract the requirement for a high level of local
ingredients in government procured products. I will continue to monitor the
progress of this initiative and offer whatever assistance I can through my
European Office."
