Stronger action needed to tackle violence against women – Jennifer McCann

8 March, 2013 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Fein MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has called for stronger action to tackle all forms of violence, abuse and discrimination against women.

Speaking ahead of an event at Parliament Buildings to celebrate International Women's Day she said:

"Ending Violence Against Women is this years theme for International Women's Day.  Despite the progress that women have made in all parts of society there are still millions of women and young girls who are suffering horrendous forms of violence, abuse and discrimination because of their sex.

“More needs to be done to challenge the culture of discrimination that allows women and young girls to be raped, beaten, trafficked and mutilated on a daily basis.

“All of us have a part to play by raising awareness of these crimes and calling on governments to ensure they are taking the necessary steps to eradicate gender based violence.

“I would ask for all of us to reflect on this International Women's Day on the fact that more women and young girls between the ages of 15-44 years old die due to gender based violence than they do from cancer, malaria, traffic accidents or war combined.”
