Martina Anderson MEP commends AFBI success
Sinn Féin MEP, Martina Anderson today attended the Agri-food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) Open Meeting at the institute's Newforge Lane facilities in Belfast. Ms Anderson commended the efforts of the institute in seeking to increase funding opportunities for R&D as presented by the EU's Horizon 2020 programme.
Ms Anderson said:
"While the economic outlook remains challenging, the increasing success of the Institute indicates that AFBI will continue to provide scientific services of the highest international standards to its growing range of public and private sector customers."There is now a growing recognition of the crucial importance of the agri-food industry to the North's economy. AFBI has continued to provide essential scientific support to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) and the Agri-food industry as they address the challenges of food security, animal and plant health, water quality, the environment, renewable energy, marine and freshwater fisheries and the economic downturn.
"I was pleased to hear how AFBI has successfully delivered the programme of statutory, diagnostic /surveillance, R&D and specialist advice work assigned to it by DARD while continuing to grow its commercial business. The highlights of the work presented, reflected the continued efforts of a dedicated staff in delivering high quality services.
"The importance of quality to the work of AFBI was reflected in the extension of ISO 17025 accreditation to a significantly wider range of analytical tests. AFBI management and staff must also be commended for the major contribution they make to all-Ireland animal health." ENDS
