Colreavy calls for greater reductions for RTE top earners
Deputy Michael Colreavy, Sinn Féin spokesperson for communications, energy and natural resources, has called for greater reductions in the salaries paid to the top earners at RTE.
Following the release of figures of the highest paid in RTE, Deputy Colreavy said:
“The information published by RTE illustrates that there are several broadcasters at the station who are paid exorbitant amounts from the public purse. While there has been a reduction from previous levels, the salaries received by several members of staff remain extremely high.
“Recently RTE has made cuts to programming, especially in regional services. As a public service broadcaster it is the duty of RTE to keep as many people as possible informed of news and current affairs. It is also imperative that RTE nurture and develop domestic home-grown dramas. These services should take precedence over high wages at RTE.
“At a time when there are so many families struggling with household bills and mortgages it angers people to see broadcasters receiving such high salaries. There remains a feeling of disengagement between the public and leading broadcasters in RTE.
“The national broadcaster should reduce the high earnings by some at the station. There should be a greater emphasis on programming rather than on personalities. This money would be better spent on diverse and quality programming which would serve all the people of the country.” ENDS
