Disastrous to cut funding to youth services - McLellan
Speaking from Leinster House after hosting a discussion on cuts to youth services in the Dublin region, Sinn Fein TD for Cork East and member of the Oireachtas committee for Children and Youth Affairs, Sandra McLellan said:
“No amount of spin from Minister Fitzgerald’s office can hide the fact that plans to cut funding to youth services in Dublin will have a disastrous impact that will affect service users, youth workers and whole communities.
“Young people need these services now more than ever. Traditionally working class areas such as Ballymun, Ballyfermot, Finglas and the inner city have been decimated by unemployment.
“Youth services give young people the opportunity to access a range of support services and to meet with their peers in a community based environment. Now is not the time to be cutting back on supports to vulnerable children and disadvantaged communities.
“Youth services have taken cuts to their budgets over the past four years. They now find themselves in a situation where they simply have nothing more to give.
“I now call on the Minister to engage with SIPTU and to reverse the proposed cuts to the Dublin Youth Services Board as a matter of urgency.”
