Government must utilise tourism resources to create jobs - McLellan
Commenting on Ireland’s exceptionally low ranking in the World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2013, specifically with regard to cultural resources, Sinn Fein tourism spokesperson, Sandra McLellan TD, said:
“Tourism is central to this government’s economic recovery programme. In spite of this it is clear that it has failed to develop our cultural and heritage capital to its full potential.
“In the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report for 2013 Ireland is ranked 29th when it comes to utilisation and development of our cultural resources.
“If you break these figures down we see that in terms of World Heritage cultural sites we are ranked 88.
“We have a very rich cultural history which is particularly evident in Dublin. I urge Minister Deenihan to protect and develop the Moore Street Battlefield site. This has huge potential to attract international tourists.
“The site and historic quarter is unique and could give a major boost to Dublin in terms of jobs and revenue if its untapped potential was properly used.
“If this government is serious about tackling the jobs crisis then it should immediately take the site into state ownership and develop it in a sophisticated and sensitive manner, so that it becomes one of the key linchpins of the Irish tourist market.
