If they are good enough for ‘the Gathering’ they are good enough to vote – Ó Clochartaigh

1 April, 2013

Sinn Féin Senator, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has called on the government to give Irish emigrants a vote in presidential elections saying “if they are good enough for the Gathering, they are good enough to vote”. The Galway West Senator has made the remarks while on a trip to the West coast of America to speak at Easter commemorations.

“The Government is very quick at calling on Irish emigrants to wear the green jersey and support the ‘auld sod’, but unfortunately, very slow to reciprocate the goodwill and allow all the Irish who have been forced to emigrate a say in the election of their president. It smacks of hypocrisy to me that the Irish Government sends representatives on trade and tourism missions, calling on the goodwill of the diaspora who have done so well for themselves Stateside, but when it comes to them having a say in what happens in Ireland, the government simply does not want to know.”

Senator Ó Clochartaigh also emphasised to the Irish communities in San Diego and San Francisco the commitment of Sinn Féin to campaign for a United Ireland and outlined the Border Poll initiative which the party has embarked upon, which strives to make the case for Irish unity in terms of the economic, social, cultural and practical benefits that it can bring.

While in California, Senator Ó Clochartaigh met with representatives from the GAA, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, the Irish business community, Veterans for Peace and many new and not so new emigrants.

“The support for peace and reconciliation in Ireland from this side of the Atlantic must not be underestimated and that effort continues. Resolutions of Irish Unity are at present being passed by legislators at city, county and state level across the United States and support for the cause is being reiterated by politicians, artists, opinion makers and leaders in the labour movement. What Sinn Féin are now calling on the Irish government to do is implement the outstanding elements of the Good Friday Agreement and to lobby the British Government to transfer full fiscal autonomy to the Assembly in the North as soon as possible.

“Irish emigrants are more than willing to play their part in creating a just and fair society in Ireland as is evident here in California, but they also want to see that the Government in Ireland are ‘cherishing all of the children of Ireland equally’, as was the vision of the signatories of the Irish proclamation and all those who struggled for Irish freedom over the centuries, who we have commemorated here over the Easter weekend.”

Má tá siad maith go leor don ‘Tóstal’, tá siad maith go leor chun vótáil – Ó Clochartaigh

Tá iarrtha ag Seanadóir Shinn Féin, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, ar an Rialtas cead a thabhairt d’imiricgh Éireannacha chun vótáil i dtoghchán na hUachtaranachta sa mbaile agus é ag rá, ‘Má tá siad maith go leor don ‘Tóstal’, tá siad maith go leor chun vótáil’.  Rinne Seanadóir Ghaillimh Thiar a chuid cainte le linn dó a bheith ar thuras chuig cósta thiar Mheiriceá le labhairt ag comóraidh na Cásca.

‘Is maith sciopaí a bhíonn an Rialtas ag iarraidh ar na Gaeil thar lear an ‘geansaí glas’ a chaitheamh agus tacú le cás na hÉireann nuair a fheileann sin dóibh. Ach faraor, níl leath an oiread fuadar futhú chun an deá-mhéin a léiriú an slí eile agus ligean do na hÉireannaigh ar fad a d’imigh ar imirce a dtuairimi a chuir in iúl maidir le cé a bheidh mar Uachtarán acu. ‘Is fiminteacht den chéad scoth atá ann nuair atá ionadaithe Rialtais anseo ‘en masse’ ar thurais trádála agus turasóireachta, ag iarraidh tacaíocht na n-imirceach a bhfuil déanta go maith acu anseo sna Stáit Aontaithe. Ach nuair a thagann sé chuig glór a thabhairt don dream céanna maidir le treo agus todhchaí na hÉireann, tugann an Rialtas s’againne an cluais bhodhar dhóibh.’

Léirigh an Seanadóir Ó Clochartaigh do Ghaeil San Diego & San Francisco chomh maith, an tiomántas atá ag Sinn Féin chun Éire Aontaithe a bhaint amach agus an fheachtas atá ar bun ag an bpáirtí le reifreann uile oileánda a reáchtáil chuige sin, a léireoidh na cúiseanna eacnamúil, sóisialta, cultúrtha agus praiticiúla a bhainfeadh lena leithéad.

Le linn dó a bheith i gCalifornia, chas an Seanadóir Ó Clochartaigh le h-ionadaithe ón CLG, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, lucht gnó Éireannacha, ‘Veterans for Peace’ agus go leor do na himiricgh nua agus iad siúd nach bhfuil chomh nua. ‘Ní féidir beag is fiú a dhéanamh don tacaíocht atá ar fáil ar an taobh seo don Atlantach don síochán agus athmhuintearas in Éireann. Tá ‘Rúin maidir le tAthaontú na hÉireann’ dhá ghlacadh ag lucht reachtaíochta ag leibhéil baile, contae agus Stát ar fud na Stáit Aontaithe faoi láthair agus tacaiocht dhá ath-dheimhniú ag polaiteoirí, ealaíontóiri, pearsain thabhachtacha agus ceannairí i ngluaiseacht na n-oibrithe don chuis seo. Séard atá Sinn Féin ag iarraidh ar an Rialtas in Éireann a dhéanamh ná cinntiú go gcuirtear Comhaontú Aoine an Chéasta i bhfeidhm ina iomláine agus stocaireacht ghníomhach a dhéanamh le Rialtas na Breataine le cumhachtaí iomlán fioscacha a thabhairt don gComthionóil ó thuaidh chomh luath agus is féidir’.

‘Tá na h-imircigh Éireannacha breá sásta a gcion féin a dhéanamh chun sochaí cothrom agus faireáilte a chothú in Éireann, ach tá siad ag iarraidh beartais den chineál céanna a fheiceáil ó Rialtas na hÉireann chun ‘an gean céanna a thabhairt do leanaí uile na hÉireann’, amhail an fhís a bhí acu siud a shínigh Forógra 1916 maraon leis an dream ar fad a bhí páirteach sa streachailt do shaoirse na hÉireann leis na céadta bliain, a bhfuil comóradh déanta againn orthu anseo an deireadh seachtaine Cásca seo’.
