Craigavon DPP is effectively finished
Sinn Féin Assembly member for Upper Bann John O'Dowd has said that the local Craigavon DPP is 'effectively finished' in the eyes of nationalists and republicans in the area.
Mr O'Dowd said:
"Before the events of Tuesday night in Lurgan the majority of nationalists and republicans in the area had no confidence in the DPP or the PSNI. This has been displayed in election after election in the constituency.
"However after the events of Tuesday night the local DPP in Craigavon is effectively finished in the eyes of the broad nationalist community. The PSNI led a coat trailing parade around Lurgan town centre and then allowed the local LVF to blockade the main street. After this they attacked young nationalists and issued misleading press releases to the media.
"The Chairperson of the DPP Jonathan Bell effectively became a cheer leader for the LVF. Given his position that he has no regrets for his actions and no intention of resigning then I think it is appropriate for nationalists sitting on the DPP now follow the lead of the nationalist and republican community in this area and consider their positions on the body."
