100 Gaelteacht bursaries is fantastic

11 April, 2013 - by Cathal Ó hOisín

Sinn Féin Irish Language Spokesperson Cathal Ó hOisín has welcomed the announcement by Culture Arts & Leisure Minister Carál Ní Chuilín that her Department will sponsor 100 bursaries for students attending the Gaelteach as part of the Líofa initiative.

 Mr. Ó hOisín said,

“Building on the success of the Líofa initiative, which is designed to encourage people to become fluent in the Irish language, this announcement 100 bursaries to courses in the Irish speaking gaelteachts in Donegal is fantastic.

“The experience of living in an Irish speaking environment for a week allows students to immerse themselves in the language and is a great learning aid.

“Apart from taking part in classes you also get a chance to speak to native Irish speakers in everyday environments like shops, pubs and homes and converse entirely through the medium of Irish.

“I would encourage anyone who has signed up to Líofa but have been unable to access the Gaelteacht due to cost, to apply for a bursary by contacting the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure through their website and accessing an application form at
