Don’t be fooled by Fianna Fail’s bleeding heart - McLellan

23 April, 2013

Speaking in Dail Eireann tonight on the Fianna Fáil’s Private Members Bill, Sinn Féin TD for Cork East Sandra McLellan said:

“To be calling now, in the aftermath of the rejection of Croke Park 2 for fairness and balance is typical of Fianna Fail manoeuvring, and it reeks of hypocrisy and political opportunism.

“When in power Fianna Fail could have introduced reforms that would have benefited low to middle income workers, instead they did nothing.

“Rather their legacy is a public service that is bloated at the top with a coterie of overpaid bureaucrats, whilst the vast majority of workers are on low to middle incomes.

“In 2010 when Fianna Fail was in power, 2,855 public servants were in receipt of Family Income Supplement because they could not survive on the poverty wages that Michael Martin and his party stood over.

“So let’s not be fooled by Fianna Fail’s recently discovered bleeding heart. When in power they are as ruthless, as anti-worker, and as pro the status quo as Fine Gael.

“Indeed under the current Fine Gael led government 3,339 public service workers are now in receipt of Family Income Supplement, that’s an increase of 484.

“Surely if evidence were needed that Fianna Fail and Fine Gael are two sides of the same coin, then this is it.

“Sinn Féin supports ordinary public sector workers. We will continue to oppose efforts to cut their pay and any changes that have a negative impact on their working conditions.” ENDS
