Dr McCarthy comment ‘well understood’ – Ó Caoláin
Reacting to the comments today from the College of Psychiatry in Ireland and the subsequent remarks of their President Dr Anthony McCarthy Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Health and Children Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD stated:
“Dr. McCarthy’s comments are well understood. That he has felt obliged to comment as he has points to the need for the Government to publish the legislation without further delay. We still have not had sight of the heads of the Bill.
“That said, I am glad that Minister Reilly has ruled out the absurd idea of women being forced to face a panel of six consultants or more.
“The reality is that we have to legislate to protect the lives of women, irrespective of how few might be directly affected. That need is now incontestable in my view.
“The legislation must be published speedily allowing for the detailed debate to then get underway.”
