Fine Gael back-benchers must not be allowed to hold up X case legislation – Ó Caoláin
Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has said the government must bring forward the heads of the bill to legislate for the X case without further delay.
Speaking today Deputy Ó Caoláin said;
“We all recognise that the issue of when it is permissible to terminate a pregnancy is divisive. It is the same across society as it is in every political party.
“However, it is now more than twenty years since the Supreme Court ruled in the X case and we as politicians do not have the luxury of procrastinating further on this issue.
“The government must bring forward the heads of the bill to allow for the real and focussed debate to commence.
“This process must not be held up by any number of Fine Gael back-benchers.
“It is the responsibility of government to act in accordance with the Supreme Court decision and it should do so now.”
