Minister needs to clarify care homes situation – Sinn Féin

26 April, 2013 - by Mickey Brady

Sinn Féin MLA Mickey Brady said the Health Minister needs to provide clarity following the announcement by two Health Trusts that they intend to close all of their residential care homes.

Speaking today the Newry & Armagh MLA and member of the Assembly’s Health Committee said:

“Within the Transforming Your Care strategy was a recommendation that the Trusts may close up to 50% of their residential care homes providing that adequate resources were placed in the community to deal with care at home.

“Many elderly people would prefer to be looked after in their own home. However, this is not always the case given people’s particular circumstances and are cases where it is necessary to provide residential homes.

“The announcements made by two Health Trusts within a day of each other that they intend to close 100% of the residential care homes is not Transforming Your Care.

“What we need now is an urgent statement form the Health Minister Edwin Poots to provide clarity on what is happening within the Trusts.”
