Welcome for Minister’s opposition to parts of welfare bill

29 April, 2013 - by Alex Maskey

Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey said that a lot of people will be relieved to hear the Department of Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland publicly state that the Welfare bill as it currently sits is not acceptable.

He was speaking after comments reported to have been made by Nelson McCausland regarding the welfare bill at the Unionist Forum meeting in the Shankill area.

The South Belfast MLA and Chair of the Department of Social Development committee said:

“I welcome the fact that the minister has accepted that the welfare bill in its present shape is not acceptable.

“The minister outlined a number of issues of concern. There are other issues of particular concern including the treatment of people with disabilities.

“Those in our community who are opposed to elements of this bill will be heartened that a range of parties that Sinn Féin have met, including the UUP, SDLP, Greens and Alliance, are agreed of the need for significant amendments.

“There is a lot of work going on. The British government and the local department need to understand that the welfare bill as it stands is not acceptable to most people in society.”
