McDonald calls for X Case legislation before recess
Speaking in the Dáil this afternoon, Sinn Féin Deputy Leader, Mary Lou McDonald TD, called on the Taoiseach to give a commitment that X Case legislation will be on the statute books by the summer recess.
The Dublin Central TD said: “We are 21 years waiting for legislation on the X Case. This is the issue that politics and politicians have dodged for long enough.
“We all understand that this issue causes difficulties within political parties, but it is time now for the Taoiseach to give a commitment that it is his firm resolve that this legislation will be on the statute books by the summer recess.
“We need the Taoiseach to clearly state that, despite all the scare mongering of recent weeks, this legislation will not change the legal position one bit but will simply clarify it.
“Legislating for the X case will provide for what is already lawful, a limited and restrictive regime providing certainty for doctors and protection for women when there is a real and substantial threat to their lives, including the threat from suicide.” ENDS
