Heads of Bill represent long overdue progress – Ó Caoláin

1 May, 2013 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has said the heads of the Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill represent long overdue progress. He called for calm debate and analysis of how the draft law can be implemented.

He said:

“The outline Protection of Life during Pregnancy Bill represents long overdue progress. While it will require detailed analysis, it appears that the draft Bill does amount to implementation of the X case judgement. This is something we in Sinn Féin have long argued for.

“The heads of the Bill need to be considered very carefully. We should now proceed calmly and reasonably, based on the wording as published. It will be considered in detail by the Oireachtas Health & Children Committee of which I am a member and I look forward to a constructive engagement there.

“We will hear the views of clinicians on the practicality of actually implementing the procedures set out in the Heads of the Bill. That will be very important in determining our final position.

“I am glad that some of the proposals speculated about are not in the Bill – the excessive panel of six, for example.

“There are strongly held views in all parties on this issue. That said, we need to act in a cross-party way as responsible legislators.”
