Programme of action needed for disabled - Sinn Féin MLA

2 May, 2013 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has called for a programme of actions to ensure the needs of people with a disability are met.

Speaking at the opening of a Disability awareness conference this morning the West Belfast MLA said:

“The Executive is determined to help everyone with a disability enjoy equal rights and the opportunity to live fulfilling lives.

“In February of this year a Disability Strategy was launched, which is a statement about how government will deliver on the rights of people with a disability.

“Included in this are those who are impacted in a wider sphere including family, carers, the wider circle of friends, relatives and co-workers. We must offer practical support to people in order to deliver measurable outcomes.

“Today provides a unique opportunity to bring together ministers, government officials, key stakeholders from the statutory, voluntary and community sectors, to discuss how we can develop a programme of action to deal with the needs of people with a disability.”
