In a Republic the people come first – McLellan
Speaking in Dáil last night on a Bill to allow banks to repossess homes, Sinn Féin TD for Cork East Sandra McLellan said:
“Sinn Fein is opposed to this Bill because it does nothing to help people in mortgage distress – indeed the opposite is case. This Bill, like all the other policy initiatives of the Fine Gael/Labour government is on the side of the rich, the privileged and big money.
“It favours the banks and financial institutions over the ordinary people of Ireland. It favours money and finance capital over the futures and lives of families, children, mothers and fathers and single people.
“The Land and Conveyancing Law Reform Bill 2013 does nothing to help people who are struggling and in arrears.
“It may ingratiate Messer’s Kenny, Gilmore, and Noonan to the Troika but this is not what good politics or for that matter, good governance is all about.
“In a Republic, good governance puts the people first. It is the people, Mary and Joe Blogs who are centre stage and not the bankers, international bureaucrats and financial capitalists.
“This Bill is contrary to their interests. Any bill or legislation that does not put the people first and protect their interests will be opposed by Sinn Fein.
“Sinn Fein is on the side of the ordinary people and we will continue to oppose privilege and to fight for their interests in this house.”
