Sinn Féin slam waste of public money on DSD leaflet - Maskey
Sinn Féin MLA Alex Maskey said the printing and distributing of a leaflet by the Department of Social Development regarding the proposed Welfare Reform changes is a gross waste of public money and shows a contempt for the democratic process.
Speaking today Mr Maskey who is Chair of the Social Development Committee said:
“The printing of over 760,000 leaflets by the Department of Social Development regarding the proposed changes to benefits under the Welfare Reform Bill is a gross waste of public money.
“Printing a leaflet that sets out changes to the benefit system when those changes haven’t even been decided is ludicrous and a complete waste of money.
“It also displays a high level of contempt for the political process and the work of the Social Development Committee who had previously stated that this leaflet should not go to print until the legislative process is complete.
“Clearly there is no legislation passed and it hasn’t yet come in front of the Executive for final consideration. Changes will clearly be made to the bill as it currently stands.
“To state in this leaflet that the information contained is correct at time of print is absolutely no cover for those who have produced it.
“Unfortunately the money for printing this leaflet will have already been spent. What the Minister must do now is move immediately to ensure that it is not delivered so as to prevent any confusion to those who are in receipt of benefits.”
