7 May, 2013 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP, Martina Anderson announcing the launch of a Northwest Health Initiative and E-health Networking event in Derry on Thursday 9th May said:

“I am pleased to host this prestigious event which will bring together representatives of some of the most prominent Pharmaceutical manufacturers and US University R&D faculties to have visited Ireland in some time.

“Senator Therese Murray, President of the Boston Senate, who I have had the pleasure of hosting here on a number of occasions will be visiting Ireland for two weeks during May.  Her visit will focus on promoting the E-health and health innovation sector.  The Senator will be accompanied by a delegation including the Senator’s Senior Advisor and Chief of Staff, the Boston Senate Chancellor and prominent members of staff from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Massachusetts Life Sciences Centre, University of Massachusetts Lowell and the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative.

“Senator Murray’s visit will provide an excellent opportunity for business and educators to meet and network with the Boston delegation and promote the facilities already existing in Derry such as C-TRIC, Co-operation and Working Together (CAWT), the Bio-Medical research facility at Magee, Project Kelvin etc and to build on the Derry-Boston-Brussels connections.

“One of the functions that Senator Murray will perform while in Derry will be to launch the Northwest Health Innovation Initiative on Thursday 9 May, 10.30am-11.30am in daVinci’s Hotel.

“Other speakers  at the launch will include Professor Tony Bjourson, Director of the Biomedical Sciences Research Institute, University of Ulster; Frank Cunningham, International Policy Officer at DG Communications Networks, Content and Technology, EU Commission; and Andrew McCormack, Permanent Secretary, Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety.

“Historically, strong links have existed between Derry, Boston and Brussels.  Senator Murray’s visit accompanied by this highly influential delegation will serve to reinforce the academic and business links between Derry and Boston.  Additionally, I will utilise my position as an MEP and the relationship I have already built up with Senator Murray and Boston, to reinforce the academic and business links between Boston and the EU.  In this way, I am confident that we can create a vibrant collaborative health innovation arc between Derry, the greater Northwest Region, Boston and the EU.”
