Further delay to National Children’s Hospital unacceptable – Ó Caoláin
Sinn Féin Health & Children spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin has described as “unacceptable” the further delay in the planning and development of the new National Children's Hospital at the St James’ Hospital site in Dublin.
“The news that the new National Children’s Hospital is to be further delayed is hugely disappointing, given the many delays and obstacles already encountered by this project.
“The decision to locate at the St. James’ Hospital site in Dublin was announced last November yet we find that the interim board will only begin tendering for a design team next month and that it will be summer 2014 before a planning application is submitted. That is unacceptable.
“The project is being pushed well into 2018 for a completion date at this stage. Such a delay is of huge concern and Health Minister James Reilly should intervene to try to expedite the process.
“He should also ensure that, in the meantime, the existing children's hospitals are properly resourced as they are struggling at present.”
