Howlin needs to back off and let discussions proceed – Mc Donald

8 May, 2013 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD today called on Brendan Howlin to back off and let LRC Chief Kieran Mulvey get on with the job he was tasked by government to do.

The Dublin Central TD said:

“Croke Park 2 is off the table. Trade union members have rejected the deal out rightly. It was a bad deal for low and middle income workers who have had their pay cut significantly over the last three years.

“Time and again, Brendan Howlin has deliberately sought to frustrate discussions between union leaders, their members and the Labour Relations Commission.

“First he employed bully-boy tactics, and now the Public Expenditure Minister is hanging the threat of significant pay cuts over the heads of his own work force.

“If government is serious about the current discussions between the LRC Chief and trade unions Brendan Howlin needs to back off and let Kieran Mulvey get on with his job.

“Trade unions have already put forward proposals that would generate additional revenue for the state as well as expenditure savings. Minister Howlin needs to listen.”
