Ferris calls for clarification on Coillte sale
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture Martin Ferris TD has called for clarification of the possibility of a sale of Coillte harvesting rights. In a question to Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney, Deputy Ferris asked whether the Minister agreed with Pat Rabbitte’s statement last week to the effect that a sale was ‘increasingly unlikely’. Minister Coveney refused to confirm that was the case, but stated that a decision would be announced in the next fortnight.
Deputy Ferris said:
“I would hope that Minister Rabbitte is correct and that the decision will reflect the conclusion of the Bacon Report that any sale of Coillte harvesting rights would represent a loss to the state, as well as other detrimental outcomes.
“I am slightly concerned therefore that Minister Coveney appears still to see some merit in the sale of harvesting rights. Whether or not this represents a difference between Labour and Fine Gael members of the Cabinet must remain speculation, but I would hope that a decision is made not to proceed with a sale."
