Troika’s praise of government’s austerity programme “insulting”: Doherty

9 May, 2013 - by Pearse Doherty TD

Sinn Fein Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has said the Troika’s praise of the government’s compliance in implementing wave after wave of austerity is insulting.

Speaking after the publication of the Troika’s latest report today Deputy Doherty said;

“What is striking about the Troika’s latest statement is the blandness with which they congratulate the government on austerity done and lay down the law on what they expect next. Clearly this government is considered a compliant lap-dog by the Troika.

“The National Youth Council of Ireland today launched a report which showed that one in four households has had a close family member emigrate in recent years. Coming on the same day this Troika statement and its back-slapping of this government is insulting to Irish people suffering under austerity.

“Irish people don’t want to hear that we are meeting and surpassing austerity targets. They want to hear that the economy is actually growing or that in the future unemployment will be lower without mass emigration.

“The government must move now to ease the burden on ordinary people. The Troika should be told that austerity is not working for anybody except them and what is needed is a new policy of job creation and investment.”
