Mayor set to challenge the threat to rail link

22 July, 2004

Derry City Sinn Féin Mayor Gearoid Ó hEára has confirmed that the Council may challenge the legality of the current threat to the Derry- Belfast rail link.

Mayor Ó hEára stated:

"I recently met with senior Officers with a view to the Council challenging on a legal basis any attempt to close this line. Although any decision may be challenged on the grounds of equality, the Council is determined that if necessary the decision making process is examined by way of a judicial review."

"As Mayor, I will continue to put pressure on Minister Spellar for the retention and improvement of the rail network between Derry and Belfast. It is vitally important that every effort is made to improve our current transport infrastructure of which rail is a core element." Ends
