McLaughlin welcomes historic inquest files release
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Truth, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA, has welcomed news that the Minister responsible for Public Records, Carál Ní Chuilín, has released two historic Inquest files.
Describing the decision as “deeply significant”, Mr McLaughlin said:
“Minister Ní Chuilín’s decision to release two historic Inquest files is a deeply significant step forward in the demand for truth recovery.
“These files were requested by a solicitor under Freedom of Information. Repeated efforts were made by a range of security interests, including the Historical Enquiries Team, to prevent full disclosure.
“Using her statutory authority as Keeper of the Records, Minister Ní Chuilín consulted with relevant departments but ultimately concluded that only personal information should be edited from the Inquest files. They were then released.
“The ramifications of the Minister’s decision are profound. This decision sets an important precedent of disclosure which points the way forward for the process of truth recovery about the nature of our conflict.
“While I have no doubt that the Minister carefully considers all her decisions on a case-by-case basis, Sinn Féin believes that this decision is unprecedented in its contribution to the wider peace process.”
