Senator Reilly hosts National Youth Council of Ireland

29 May, 2013 - by Kathryn Reilly

Sinn Féin Youth affairs spokesperson Senator Kathryn Reilly hosted a delegation from the National Youth Council of Ireland in the Oireachtas today for a cross party briefing on their recently released report, Time to Go? A Study of Youth Emigration in Ireland.

James Doorley and Marie-Claire McAleer from the Youth Council presented the report’s findings to a meeting of TDs, Senators and staff in the AV Room at 1pm.

Senator Reilly said:

“This National Youth Council of Ireland report is an important piece of research. One of its strengths is that it gives a voice to the many Irish people who have moved abroad in recent years.

“The purpose of today’s cross party briefing was to provide members with an opportunity to hear the detail of the report.

“While the experience of many young people abroad was positive, the report confirmed that lack of employment opportunities at home as their main reason for leaving. The majority of those surveyed also expressed a desire to return home.

“The report’s seven recommendations focus on government action to support those young people who emigrate. The report calls for a minister with responsibility for emigration policy and for the development of a strategy of supporting emigrants both before they leave and while they are away.

“The government should give serious consideration to these recommendations.”
