Anderson lobbies EU for stronger Tobacco Directive to mark World No Tobacco Day

29 May, 2013 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP, Martina Anderson was in the European Parliament in Brussels today lobbying MEP's in the Environment committee to adopt her amendments to strengthen the tobacco products directive on 'World No Tobacco Day.

Martina Anderson said

"It is essential that we seek to strengthen this legislation which clearly prioritises the health of citizens and especially young people, rather than listening to an industry which accounts for 5 million deaths globally each year.

"It was excellent news this week when the Irish Health Minister took the strong decision to standardised no-branding packaging to protect and prioritise citizens' health over tobacco industry profits. Perhaps Minister Reilly would do well to remind his coalition partners, including the Taoiseach, of the importance of this decision. That Enda Kenny along with Ministers Noonan and Shatter agreed to meet with the tobacco industry lobbyists recently is extremely disappointing.

"The Taoiseach’s actions in agreeing to engage with such an industry, sends a completely wrong message. Public health interests and those of tobacco companies cannot be reconciled. An Taoiseach needs to stand squarely behind his Health Minister on this issue. We need to be cracking down on this industry which is constantly seeking to recruit new, younger addicts to their cancer-causing products and not cosying up to them.’
