Sinn Féin Conference for an Equal Future launched

30 May, 2013 - by Gerry Kelly

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly, along with Belfast City Councillors, Janice Austin and Niall Ó Donnghaile have today launched a Conference ‘Belfast: A City of Equals in an Island of Equals’ to be held in Belfast’s Europa Hotel on June 7th aimed at building dialogue.

Speaking today Gerry Kelly MLA said:

“Sinn Féin has stated that we are wholly committed to guaranteeing parity of esteem for both British and Irish identities on this island.

“Our Peace Process cannot be taken for granted as recent events have shown.

“All of us, Republicans, Unionists, Nationalists and Loyalists have a shared obligation to ensure that future generations grow up in a better place than many of us did.

“Our history has shown us that the starting block for achieving anything, for making progress, has been dialogue.

“In our view this process entails a real engagement on what we mean by identity, equality, mutual respect and parity of esteem. These may be uncomfortable conversations but they need to happen.

“On 7th June in the Europa Hotel, Republicans will host an important conference to engage with and listen to the aspirations and apprehensions of the city’s Unionist and Protestant community.

“This conference is aimed at beginning that discussion at a Belfast level with groups and individuals from a wide range of society being invited.”
