Sinn Fein calls for expansion of Historic Towns Scheme – McLellan
Speaking in the Dail tonight on the Historic Towns Imitative Sinn Fein spokesperson on Tourism, Sandra McLellan TD said:
“I can say with some confidence that Youghal, Listowel and Westport have benefitted greatly as a result of the Historic Towns Initiative.
“The pilot scheme has had a knock on effect and businesses have improved and decorated their premises. This adds to the overall aesthetic of the townscape and greatly enhances the visual quality of the streetscape.
“There is a clear connection between the visual impact of a town and its ability to attract tourists. And while there is obviously a difference when it comes to the towns in question, nonetheless the pilot scheme promotes and fosters tourism irrespective of where a particular town is on the destination pecking order.
“In the current climate of mass emigration and high rates of unemployment it is impossible to overestimate the importance of schemes like the Historic Towns Initiative for the three towns in the pilot scheme.
“Sinn Fein calls on the Minister to continue the scheme and expand it in 2014, and to make an allocation for this in the coming budget.”
