Minister needs to explain recurring housing problems – Fra McCann

7 June, 2013 - by Fra McCann

Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann said Minister Nelson McCausland needs to explain what he is doing to deal with the serious problems, which exist in maintenance contracts issued by the Housing Executive.

The West Belfast MLA and party Housing Spokesperson said:

“Several years ago the minister said he was moving to deal with the serious problems which included the Red Sky fiasco and putting in place procedures to deal with the way all aspects of maintenance contracts are delivered.

“The recent announcement that there was another huge under-spend by the Housing Executive in their budget and the collapse of a contractor delivering maintenance services to West Belfast shows the problems that still exists.

“While the blame must lie at the door of the Housing Executive the minister and his department must also bare responsibility.

“The minister is coming to the Assembly on Monday to make a statement and he should order an immediate enquiry into this problem.

“He needs to explain his department’s role in this and why measures he said would rectify these problems have not worked.

“The minister needs to move ahead with the new beginning in housing. Sinn Féin believes that if the will exists this could be done within the lifetime of this Assembly. The protection of public sector housing can’t wait on the whims of others.”
