Support for IF campaign ahead of G8 coming to Ireland
Sinn Féin MLA and Junior Minister Jennifer McCann has added her support for the IF campaign.
Speaking ahead of meeting the organisers today the West Belfast MLA said:
"It is totally unacceptable in a world which produces enough food to feed everyone that 2 million children are dying from malnutrition every year and that one in eight people wake up hungry every day.
“In the run up to the G8 leaders coming to Fermanagh on Monday, the IF Campaign provides us with an opportunity to not only show our solidarity with those most vulnerable to hunger but to influence those who have the power to address the problem.
“There are a number of organisations and agencies that have came together to drive the IF Campaign to call on the G8 leaders to take practical action to stop the scandal of world hunger.
The Campaign’s organisers are hosting a mammoth open-air concert this Saturday at Botanic Gardens, which will be a family fun day for everyone who wants to show solidarity with the campaign.
“Not enough is being done to tackle hunger and climate change and associated injustices. Next week the Assembly will debate an all Party motion calling on the eight global leaders to honour their responsibilities to developing countries, and stop the scandal, which results in 7,000 children under the age of five dying every day due to under-nutrition.”
