Sinn Féin welcomes publication of Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013
Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has welcomed the publication of the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill.
“The publication of this necessary legislation is welcomed by Sinn Féin.
“We have stated consistently that the introduction of legislation in line with the X case judgement and in compliance with the ABC case judgement and the Expert Group recommendations is required.
“We believe there is now a very widely held view, and we would say a majority view, in Irish society that legislation along the lines set out in the Heads of the Bill, and in this legislation as now published, is not only necessary but long overdue.
“We must safeguard the lives of women. We must provide legal clarity. We must ensure that there are clear guidelines for clinicians. Some have argued that these conditions already exist. I would argue, and Sinn Féin has long argued, that that is not the case and hence we need this legislation.
“Over the coming days we will assess the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill on the basis of our party policy and in light of the questions and answers and issues raised in the Oireachtas Health & Children Committee hearings and in the wider debate.
“We will fully participate in the Second Stage debate next week and in the Committee Stage that will follow and will table amendments if we decide amendments are necessary.”
