Government not allowing a proper debate on Seanad reform – Stanley
Speaking on the Seanad Referendum Bill in the Dáil today Sinn Féin local government and reform spokesperson Brian Stanley said;
“The government’s introduction of the proposed amendment to the Constitution smacks of arrogance and desperation. Why are you fearful to let the convention debate, discuss and make its proposals?
“This government was elected just over two years ago and one of its promises was reform. But to date all we have had is proposals that centralise power around the cabinet table.
“What we have in front of is not reform. Abolition is not reform.
“The proposal in front of us will certainly not make changes or improve the Seanad. It will simply shut it down.
“This debate is grossly premature and will not allow for a full more robust debate about democratic structures in this state and across the island.
“This is unfortunate and may be seen in due course as a wasted opportunity.”
