Check your European Health Insurance Card before leaving home

21 June, 2013 - by Seán Crowe TD

Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on foreign affairs, Sean Crowe TD, has warned that people should check their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and make sure it is not out of date before they travel this summer.
Deputy Crowe said: “If they don’t have the card, there may be still time to get one before a European holiday. The card, which is free, entitles people to health care in the EU and Iceland, Switzerland and Norway.
“Having the card can make it much easier to get medical assistance, in the public health service of the country you are visiting, if you are unlucky enough to suffer ill-health or injury while abroad.
“Anyone living in Ireland can apply for the EHIC from the Health Service Executive which promises that you will have it in ten working days.
“You can apply online at www.hse.ie or at your local HSE office.
“Don’t leave it to the last minute, apply now.”
