Extra teaching posts welcomed

26 June, 2013 - by Chris Hazzard

Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Chris Hazzard has said that the announcement today by Education Minister John O’Dowd that another 36 newly qualified teachers will be employed to tackle numeracy and literacy has to be welcomed.

 Mr. Hazzard stated,

“In October the Office of the First and Deputy First Minister announced a scheme where 230 newly qualified teachers would be employed.  Today’s announcement that another 36 teachers will now be employed as part of the scheme has to be welcomed.

“Not only will this allow newly qualified teachers to get experience in the classroom but will also raise numeracy and literacy standards.

“The number of children achieving basic Maths and English qualifications has been gradually rising but we can always do more.

“The Minister has to be congratulated for continuing his pledge to tackle the number of children leaving school without basic Maths and English qualifications while also addressing the issue of getting newly qualified teachers into work.”
